Xi'an

Xi'an City Wall (西安城墙)

A long, exposed rampart where the right experience is usually a short section or a carefully planned ride—not a compulsory full circuit. Choose a gate, decide whether walking or cycling is suitable, then confirm the current entry and rental conditions before committing.

First decision: walk a section, ride, or stay below

Walk: best for people who want one gate and a short stretch, with time to return the same way. It is exposed, uneven and can be uncomfortable in heat, wind or rain.

Cycle: only if the rental desk is operating, the rider is comfortable with uneven historic paving and the return point is understood before paying.

Use the main gate carefully: South Gate can be a practical entry point, but it is not automatically the right start for every hotel or destination. Match gate, route and exit to the actual day.

Before you go

  • Live information: entry hours, gate access, ticket products, rental and evening activities vary. The official City Wall site and current gate notice should decide your plan, not a fixed price table. Xi’an City Wall official site →
  • Ticket versus rental: treat them as separate decisions. Ask what is included, which return gate is permitted and what happens in rain or a late return.
  • Choose your gate: South Gate (Yongning Gate, 永宁门) is the main, most photogenic entrance and has the best bike-rental station. East, West and North gates are smaller and quieter.
  • Weather and energy: avoid an exposed rampart during unsafe weather or if your group is already tired. A short wall section can be more valuable than forcing a full loop.

Inside the site

South Gate (Yongning Gate, 永宁门)

This is the grandest of the four main gates and the one most visitors use. Inside the gate you pass through a barbican and watchtower before reaching the wide rampart. It's also the starting point for the nightly ceremonies and the best place to rent a bike.

Walking vs cycling

OptionWhat to expect
Full bike loopOnly after checking rental conditions, weather, physical comfort and a permitted return point.
Walk a sectionThe best default: select one gate and a clear turnaround point instead of treating the entire circumference as compulsory.
Electric cartAsk at the gate whether it is operating, where it goes and whether it fits your access needs.

Practical notes

TopicWhat to know
LanguagePrepare the Chinese gate name and a translation app; do not assume an English-speaking rental desk.
MapsSearch for “西安城墙南门” or the exact intended gate, then confirm the current entrance.
PaymentConfirm the current ticket and rental payment/deposit terms before selecting a product.
ToiletsAvailable near major gates; carry tissues and sanitizer.
DronesNot allowed over or near the wall.
SafetyThe rampart has no railings in some sections. Watch children and hold phones firmly — drops are final.
EtiquetteDon't sit or lean on the parapets; bikes yield to pedestrians.

After you leave

  • Food: South Gate opens straight onto the pedestrian zone around Bell Tower and the Muslim Quarter. Head north for skewers, roujiamo and biangbiang noodles.
  • Drinks with a view: Several rooftop bars near South Gate look back at the illuminated wall after dark.
  • Scams: Costumed "warriors" near the gate may charge for photos. Ask before you pose.
  • Complaints: 12345 or the gate visitor center.

Pre-trip prep

  • App bundle: Alipay/WeChat, Amap/Baidu Maps, DiDi.
  • Plan: keep water, weather protection and a live-map return route; do not rely on a fixed rental deposit or shop price.
  • Comfort: Wear closed shoes; the stone surface is rough. Sunscreen and a hat are essential in summer.
  • Pair it with: Bell Tower and Drum Tower are a 10-minute walk north.
