Bell Tower (钟楼)

Xi’an’s central landmark is worth visiting in one of two ways: see the exterior and use it to orient an old-city walk, or buy entry only if you want the small interior exhibition and elevated view. Do not let a fixed show-time, ticket or evening-light claim dictate the whole day.

Decide: exterior landmark or paid interior?

Before you go

• Location: at the old city’s central four-street junction. Save 西安钟楼 and 钟楼站 in a Chinese map app, then use the route and pedestrian approach shown on the day.

• Pairing: consider Bell and Drum Towers together only if you have the time and both interiors genuinely interest you; the exterior-to-Muslim-Quarter walk is a valid alternative.
• Access: You reach the tower through an underground pedestrian tunnel. Follow signs for Bell Tower (钟楼) from the metro or any corner of the intersection.
• Best time: late afternoon or evening. Daytime gives you clearer views of the streets; nighttime gives you the classic photo.

Inside the tower

• The climb: expect stairs to the main hall; assess suitability for your group before buying if stairs or crowded interiors are a concern.
• The view: Look down the four cardinal streets — South Street to the wall, North Street toward the railway, East and West Streets toward the city gates.
• Performance: treat any musical demonstration as a current on-site programme, not a guaranteed hourly inclusion.
