Drum Tower (鼓楼)
The Drum Tower is a short, well-placed stop at the edge of Xi'an's Muslim Quarter. It works when you want historical context and a view before food, but it is not automatically worth a second paid tower ticket if your time, mobility or interest is limited.
Decide whether to enter or use the exterior
Ticket decision: check the current official/venue ticket instruction for price, combination eligibility, entry window and passport requirements. A combo is useful only if you genuinely plan to enter both towers on the same terms.
Map: save 西安鼓楼 and the next destination in Chinese. The surrounding pedestrian area is easy to enter from several sides but the right exit matters when you are meeting someone or heading to a restaurant.
Timing: leave enough space between the tower and dinner. A performance, security queue or crowded Muslim Quarter can make a “45-minute stop” significantly longer.
Comfort: check whether the stairs and indoor circulation suit you. The illuminated exterior can be a complete experience when you do not want another tower interior.
Before you go
- Location: West end of the Bell Tower intersection, at the entrance to the Muslim Quarter. Metro: Zhonglou Station (Lines 2 & 6) then walk 2 minutes west.
- Opening hours: verify the current seasonal opening and final-entry time with the venue; do not use an old summer/winter schedule as a travel-day guarantee.
- Ticket: compare a single entry with a combination only after confirming date, identity and whether both interiors fit your day.
- Drum performance: treat any performance as a same-day bonus. Confirm time and availability at the entrance rather than scheduling your dinner around a historical timetable.
- Best time: late afternoon, then step straight into the Muslim Quarter for dinner.
Inside the tower
- The drums: A large collection of drums on display, including the giant main drum used for the daily performance.
- View: Smaller balconies than the Bell Tower, but you look directly down into the Muslim Quarter's main street.
- Qing-dynasty furniture: Some rooms hold furniture and art exhibits that round out the visit.

After you leave

- Photos: The Drum Tower is beautifully lit at night and easier to photograph than the Bell Tower because the street in front is narrower.
