How to get there

The museum is at 160 Donghu Road, Wuchang District (武昌区东湖路160号), on the shore of East Lake. It has a South Gate (main individual entrance) and a North Gate.

• Metro: save 湖北省博物馆 and 省博湖北日报站 in a Chinese map app. The museum’s service information identifies the South Gate as the individual-visitor entrance and the North Gate as an exit with luggage storage.
• Taxi / ride-hailing: set the destination to the South Gate printed on the official visitor information, not simply a generic museum pin.
• Check live transport: route numbers, exits and road access are operational details, so use your map app on the day rather than treating a guide as a timetable.

How long to spend

• Minimum: 2 hours — rush the two headline treasures (Sword of Goujian, the chime bells) and leave.
• Recommended: 3 hours for selected galleries plus any current chime-bell performance you have separately confirmed.
• Full experience: 4–6 hours if you explore both buildings and special displays. Check the current opening and last-entry information on the official service page before choosing your arrival time.
• Best approach: arrive within your booked slot and go first to the one gallery that matters most to you. The museum is large; “seeing everything” is not a useful target.

What most visitors love

• Zenghouyi chime bells (曾侯乙编钟): 65 bronze bells from a 5th-century-BC tomb, each able to sound two tones — the centerpiece of the whole museum, in the south hall 1F.
• Sword of Goujian (越王勾践剑): a 2,500-year-old sword that came out of the ground still sharp and barely rusted — "the world's No.1 sword." South hall 2F. No flash photography.

• Chu culture & gold: the "800 Years of Chu" (楚国八百年) gallery and the Liangzhuang Wang (梁庄王) gold-and-gem treasury are spectacular.
• Yuan blue-and-white meiping (元青花四爱图梅瓶): a rare Yuan-dynasty porcelain masterpiece, north hall 3F.

Hidden gems

• North hall upper floors: the 4th floor is the quietest — fewer crowds, and it holds the Liangzhuang Wang gold and the Yuan meiping.
• Interpretation: ask at the information desk about the day’s volunteer, audio-guide and language options. Do not rely on a guidebook’s published tour time.
• Yunxian Man skull (郧县人头骨化石): a 1-million-year-old hominid skull that reshaped ideas about human origins — easy to miss, on the north hall's prehistoric floor.
• Stamp / postcard hunt: there are themed stamp points and a "Jing-Chu Impression" post office inside — a low-key souvenir for kids and collectors.
• Walk to East Lake after: the museum backs right onto East Lake — rent a bike or stroll the shoreline to decompress.

Things to watch out for

• Use the exact document: passport and other non-mainland-ID visitors should bring the original reservation document; a screenshot alone may not substitute for identification.

• No flash, no selfie sticks, no outside food: respect the "no flash" rule at the Sword of Goujian — it's irreplaceable. Bags can be stored free at both gates.
• AC is strong: bring a light jacket; the halls get cold.
• Go early: the Sword of Goujian gallery queues by mid-morning — hit it first at 09:00.
• Two buildings: south + north halls are connected by an upper walkway; the treasures are split, so follow the route (south 2F sword → 1F bells → 3F Chu → basement concert → north hall) to avoid backtracking.

• Book: make a free real-name reservation through the museum’s official route, then save its QR code and carry the original passport used for it.
