National Forest Park — the Avatar Mountains (张家界国家森林公园)

The core landscape of the Wulingyuan area: a very large network of valleys, viewpoints and mountain roads, not one easy “Avatar stop.” Give it at least two days if this is the reason you came to Zhangjiajie, and choose your entrance and route before buying transport add-ons.

The planning mistake to avoid

Build the day around a single mountain-side objective

• Day 1 objective: pick one upper-area route, such as Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain, and accept that queues or weather may trim it. This prevents a day spent only transferring between viewpoints.
• Day 2 objective: choose a lower, walking-oriented route such as Golden Whip Stream or a different section. This gives you a real fallback if clouds hide the high views.
• Entry and exit: write down both gate names in Chinese before leaving the hotel. If you stay in Wulingyuan, the east-side Wujiayu gate may be convenient; it is not automatically the best choice for every route.
• Ticket check: bring the original identity document used for any reservation, and read the current product details for admission, shuttle, lifts and cableways. Never make an assumption from an older screenshot.

Inside: use the map as a decision tool

• Upper viewpoints: use the park map to connect only a small number of named stops. If cloud closes in, do not wait indefinitely at one platform—move to a lower route or save the view for the next valid day.
• Valley walking: keep a lower route for when visibility is poor or your group needs a slower day. Treat macaques as wildlife: do not feed them, display food or approach for photographs.
• Paid vertical transport: decide based on your energy, queue length and the planned exit, not a bundle’s marketing label. Ask staff where the chosen lift or cableway leaves you before paying.

Stay near the route you actually chose

• Separate attraction: Tianmen Mountain, the Grand Canyon and this Forest Park each use their own operating plan and admission. Build separate days rather than treating “Zhangjiajie” as one ticketed site.
• When plans fail: keep the booking record, ask the nearest visitor centre while you are in the park, then contact the seller if a ticket or transport item differs from what was sold.

Before leaving the hotel

• Check the current entry requirements and any service interruption notice.
• Save the intended entry gate, planned exit gate and accommodation in a Chinese map app.
• Carry the document used for booking, water, weather protection and shoes suitable for long, changing terrain.

Plan this visit like a first-timer

1. Use Wulingyuan as your base and enter through the gate that matches the day’s route; do not change gates casually once inside.
2. Day one: go early to Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain; use park buses and lifts to protect your energy for viewpoints.
3. Day two: slow down in Golden Whip Stream or another valley route; mist is normal and can be part of the landscape.

On-site reality check

• The National Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain are separate parks with separate tickets and reservations.
• Carry the booking passport, a charged phone, water and offline maps; signal can weaken away from major stations.
• Eco-buses connect zones but queues and weather set the pace, so keep the itinerary flexible.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Do not try to finish the whole park in one day — it turns spectacular scenery into transport stress.
• Do not feed macaques or leave food visible; keep a calm distance and secure bags.
