Booking hotels in China that accept foreign guests

The short answer

Confirm the property before you pay hotel + written confirmation

Use a platform filter only as a starting point, not a guarantee. Choose a property with a clear address and recent guest information, select a cancellation policy you understand, then send a short written message asking whether it can register the passport nationality you will bring. At check-in, show the original passport used for the reservation.

A hotel stay involves both a booking and an accommodation record. The practical goal is to confirm the property before you arrive, retain the written reply, and keep a workable backup for the first night.

The rule

When a foreigner stays in a hotel, the hotel is responsible for submitting the accommodation registration to local public-security authorities. The National Immigration Administration explains that the separate 24-hour filing requirement applies when staying somewhere other than a hotel. Checked September 2026.

The practical risk

A booking listing cannot prove how a particular front desk will handle an international passport on your arrival date. Independent properties, late arrivals and remote destinations deserve an extra written confirmation; do not rely on a vague listing label alone.

The safer method

Compare the property on an official or established booking channel, choose a rate with terms you can accept, ask the property to confirm in writing, and save the response. A larger chain can be a sensible first-night choice, but no brand name replaces confirmation.

Where to book

Compare channels, then confirm the property

Start with the channel that lets you read the room, cancellation and contact terms clearly. Trip.com is one English-language option (affiliate link). It can help you compare properties, but it does not remove the need to check the actual property and its policy before travel.

Use a first-night backup strategy

A recognizable chain or a property you have confirmed directly can reduce uncertainty after a long arrival day. It is still sensible to check the individual property, because the relevant question is the specific reservation and front desk, not a logo.

SituationLower-risk choiceWhy it helps
Late first-night arrivalA property that has replied in writing and has a staffed front deskYou can resolve a problem while support channels are open and you still have a backup
Small town or guesthouseConfirm passport handling, arrival time and cancellation terms before paymentListing information may not answer operational questions
Apartment or staying with a hostAgree in advance who will complete accommodation registrationFor non-hotel stays, the guest or host has a separate accommodation-registration duty within 24 hours

Two more habits that save you

Habit 1 — Book free-cancellation

Free cancellation can reduce the cost of changing plans, but only within the rate's stated deadline. Read the deadline, local time zone and no-show terms before relying on it.

Habit 2 — Confirm by message

Send this via Trip.com chat before arrival and save the reply:

"Hello, I'll check in with a US passport. Can your front desk register a foreign passport? Please confirm. Thank you."
Insider tip

First night = a confirmed, staffed property. After a long flight, choose a hotel that has replied to your passport-registration question and can receive you at your stated arrival time. A larger chain may be convenient, but the confirmation matters more than the brand name.

When check-in goes wrong (the small problems)

ProblemWhyFix
"We cannot complete your check-in"The property has not confirmed the reservation or cannot process it at that timeRemain polite, show the written confirmation, ask whether another room or nearby property can be arranged, then contact the booking channel using its documented support route. Keep screenshots and do not cancel before you understand the rate terms.
The desk is unsure about the passport detailsThe name, date of birth or document number may not match the reservationCheck the reservation against the passport character by character. Ask the property to explain what is missing; do not assume a police office can replace the hotel's own check-in process.
You arrive after midnightThe front desk may need advance notice or the reservation may be treated as a no-showMessage the property with your expected arrival time before travel and retain its reply. Keep a nearby, cancellable backup in mind if you have a tight connection.
A region has special travel requirementsRules and permits can change and may be route-specificUse the relevant official authority or licensed provider for the current requirement; do not rely on a generic hotel listing or an old travel post.

If turned away: (1) ask the desk for a nearby foreigner-friendly hotel, (2) call Trip.com's fast English support, (3) head to the nearest international chain — they almost always have a late room. Then sort the refund in the morning with your screenshot.

Before you fly checklist

Quick checklist

  1. Compare the property and rate on a channel you can understand.
  2. Message the exact property with your passport nationality and expected arrival time.
  3. Choose a cancellation policy only after reading its deadline and no-show terms.
  4. Keep the written reply, property address and reservation number offline.
  5. For special regions or routes, check current official requirements before booking transport or accommodation.
A hotel listing is a starting point, not a guarantee. Confirm the individual property in writing, carry the original passport used for the reservation, and keep a realistic backup for your arrival night.
